IELTS Writing

The IELTS Writing component requires a candidate to attempt two tasks.

Task 1: An IELTS GT test taker needs to write a letter while the Academic candidate needs to write a report/summary based on the given graph(s) in task 1. Minimum word requirement for task 1 is 150 for both letter and report writing. A candidate is allowed to spend 60 minutes for the whole writing section and it is advisable for them to spend 20 minutes on task 1.

Task 2: The task two of the writing component requires all candidates to write an essay on a given topic. This section is same both for the GT and Academic test takers. The essay must meet the minimum word requirement which is 250. It is advisable to finish this task in 40 minutes.

Many test takers wonder whether to use a pen or a pencil to write answers. We recommend using a pencil as it is easier to correct mistakes when you write with a pencil.
