Written by IELTS Mentor

IELTS Letter Writing / GT Writing Task 1:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You have just spent a weekend staying at the Lilo Hotel in Adelaide. When you got home, you find that you have left a bag at the hotel.

Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter:

  • introduce yourself
  • describe the bag and its content
  • describe how you left your bag and what action you would expect from him/her

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write your own addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Model Answer 1:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I stayed at your Lilo Hotel in Adelaide from 2nd to 5th April 2020 in room 254. I am writing for your assistance in finding the bag that I have left in the room during my stay at your hotel.

Firstly, I am gratified to have outstanding service at your hotel. I really enjoyed it and I would definitely like to come again. Now, I would like you to help me locate my bag. It is a black bag and has blue stripes on both ends with two zippers attached to it.

The bag that I left at your hotel contains some important documents and some of my personal belongings including contact cards, a few dresses, pens and a diary. You are already aware of the fact that I visited Adelaide to attend a professional meeting. To keep pace with my colleagues, I hurried to check out and left the bag in the closet. Please check with your lost and found department about the bag and inform me at your earliest so that I can come to pick my bag.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Fahad Sultan

Model Answer 2:

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Martin Ben, and I am writing this letter to inform you that I have left a bag at your hotel before leaving Adelaide. Unfortunately, I came to know about this mistake only after arriving at Sydney Airport.

I stayed in room number 221, and I might have left the bag in one of the closed cabinets of the TV stand. Now, to describe the bag for your convenience, it is a small, black handbag for men, and it has a single white colour belt. As for its contents, the bag has some precious drawings of my little niece, who drew them for me. Besides, it also has a few precious gifts which were chosen and bought by my family members. So the little bag is priceless to me because of its emotional value.

So, once you find the bag, please send it to me in a courier mail service. And, also please do not forget to charge the courier fee from my credit card. By the way, the credit card information should in on your file.

Yours faithfully,

Martin Ben

In the second paragraph, you should usually write the name.

I do not think there is any need to write your name in starting of the letter if you have to write it at the end. Please correct me if I am wrong.
