Discussion Topic - Your friends.
Part 1: Introduction & Interview
Q. 1. Do you prefer to have one particular friend or a group of friends? [Why?]
Answer: I prefer having a group of friends instead of just one friend mainly because a group of friends will have different kinds of interests and opinions for different kinds of things to work with so that I know exactly who to rely upon in which situations. Besides, when we have a group of friends, we would be able to do some group activities which are more pleasant and exciting.
Q. 2. What do you like doing most with your friend/friends?
Answer: I mostly like to hang out with my friends at a park, café or restaurants and enjoy some light moments from time to time. Then, of course, there are times when I like to talk about an array of serious issues, which are affecting our lives one way or another, also with my friends. Finally, we play some sports together and travel to distant places.
Q. 3. Do you think it’s important to keep in contact with friends you knew as a child? [Why/why not?]
Answer: I believe it is important to keep in contact with any friend, including childhood friends because we would never know who would be able to help us when. Besides, we should keep in touch with our childhood friends because they are always special due to the fact they don’t carry any “baggage” of selfish interests most of the times.
Q. 4. What makes someone a good friend?
Answer: There is a proverb that says, “a friend in need is a friend indeed”, and I also happen to agree with it. In fact, we can consider a person as a good friend when we can rely upon him in any kind of circumstances. A good friend always should be loyal, trustworthy, honest and intelligent.
Q. 5. Do you have online friends?
Answer: Yes, I have a few online friends from different countries. I mostly have those online friends on Facebook and Twitter and some of them contact me on a regular basis and even send me letters and postcards from time to time.
Alternative answer: No, I don’t really have any online friends because it is very difficult to learn about a person online even though he or she may actually be a good person. Besides, I don’t really have enough time to go online to make friends apart from doing some research works or looking for some important information.
Part 3: Details Discussion.
1. What do you think the most important quality in a friend is?
Answer: In my opinion, honesty and trustworthiness are the two most important qualities for friendship as it is difficult to befriend anyone who tells us lies and can't be trusted. If you can trust someone to do the right thing in all situations and they are not tempted by temporary gain, it's a good bet they will make very good friends. Being kind, funny, loyal, thoughtful and welcoming are also some of the important qualities in a friend that we can expect.
2. Why do people tend to talk about their personal problems with their friends?
Answer: In my humble opinion, I think that people talk about their personal problems with their friends because of two reasons. The first reason is- people like to expect some kind of comforts and consolation from their friends when talking about any problems with them so that they can feel better. The second reason is that they probably want to get some suggestions, advice or solution from their friends by telling them about their problems because the truth is we sometimes become so much overwhelmed with the problems that we can’t think of any good solutions on our own.
3. Do you think that friendship is important for people to be happy?
Answer: Friends help us deal with stress; make better lifestyle choices that keep us strong, and allow us to rebound from health issues and disease more quickly. In fact, some studies reveal that social integration, engagement with friends and family, and emotional support from a social network, which include friends, are positively associated with better cognitive function and happiness in older adults. Friendship is equally important to our mental health as well, which means we're happier when we choose to spend our time with our friends and enjoy their company.
4. Do you think teachers should try to be a friend to their students, or should they keep a distance?
Answer: No, I don’t think that teachers should try to become friends to their students because if they become friends to their students, it will be very difficult for the teachers to guide their students and correct their students when they make any mistakes. Besides, if the teachers become “friends” to their students, they will stop respecting and listening to the teachers by challenging their (the teachers) authority. Of course, the teachers can be “friendly” (and there is a difference between being “friendly” and becoming “friends”) with their students to build a good working relationship with their students, but that must not cross the “professional limit”.
5. Do you think you will have more friends or fewer friends as you get older? Why?
Answer: I like to think that I will have more friends as I get older, primarily because I am an outgoing person who likes to meet new and different kinds of people. Besides, I like to visit different places in order to learn about different cultures and lifestyles, which naturally means that I will make new friends in new places. Finally, I will have more friends also because when I become older, I will have more spare time to work on myself, like building new relationships and creating new networks of friends.
6. Would you say someone in your family is also your friend? Why?/ Why not?
Answer: Yes, I would say that my mother and my elder brother are probably among some of the best friends, I currently have, primarily because I have managed to spend more time with them since my childhood. They are very much like my friends to me also because they have the same kind of bubbly and outgoing personality like me. Finally, I consider my mother and elder brother like some of my best friends because we enjoy talking about all kinds of things with each other, which certainly helps us understand each other better than the other members of my family.
