A broad coalition of U.S. public health, education, and advocacy groups are marking June 2 as the first annual National Gun Violence Awareness Day. The date was chosen to honor Hadiya Pendleton, a Chicago teenager who was shot and killed in January 2013. Today would have been her 18th birthday. Supporters have been asked to wear orange, a color traditionally used by hunters to alert others not to shoot.
